Electric Blankets

Have you ever had an electric blanket? Some people are scared of lying on something that is plugged into the national grid and I have to admit that when I think of electric blankets in that manner, they do sound pretty frightening.

However, there are two kinds of electric blankets: there are those that are meant to stay on all night and there are those that are intended to be turned off and unplugged before you get into bed.

Electric Feel

The second type is of course the one to be suggested for those of a nervous nature. I have never owned an electrically heated blanket, because my father said that they were for 'sissys', but I have slept in beds that made use of electric blankets.

When I stayed over at my maternal grand-parents' house or my Aunty Lil's there was always an electric blanket in the bed. My aunty used a pre-warmer and my grand-parents used the 'always-on' variety. As a young boy, I have to say that the 'always-on' variety of electric blanket was too warm for me.

However, in those days, in the Sixties, houses were not as draft-proof as they are now and I did not know anyone whose house was centrally heated or double glazed. In fact, everyone that I knew had to put an overcoat on the bed in winter if it got especially cold. It did not cross my mind that that was unusual, everyone did it.

The fact is that some individuals feel the cold more than others and there are many reasons for this ranging from frailty to age and sickness. Another reason for using electrically-heated blankets is if it is too costly to heat the whole house or bedroom. It is always going to be less expensive to heat a bed that it is to heat a bedroom. The cost of pre-heating a double bed is still pennies compared with using an electric fire.

Some individuals, my wife included, likes to keep the ambient temperature in the bedroom cold. OK, cold in Thailand is around 20c, but while we were in the UK, she insisted that we slept with the windows open in winter and it was really cold. She is not alone in liking to sleep in a warm bed while her face is cold. She says that she gets a better night's sleep in this way.

If you or a sick or old relative wants to try an electric blanket, be careful where you get it from. In saying this I mean be careful of purchasing a cheap electrically-heated blanket from abroad off eBay in case it is not made to run off the electric supply that you have in your country.

You also have to make sure that the blanket conforms to the health and safety laws in your country. Electric blankets are safe if you follow basic health and safety rules, but be wary of 'always-on' blankets if you eat in bed.

Electric cookers have been around for a long time. Professional chefs prefer these cooker because it is non reactive. Different brands are making programmable electric pressure cooker. These have push-button controls and digital display making it an attractive package. They can be programmed for high or low pressure cooking, browning, simmering, sautéing or warming. You can feel that an electronic thermostat is more foolproof than setting a stove-top control to a precise position. They give flexibility, however, because you can't open the lid until the cooker says you can. In the stove top models you can instantly drop the pressure and open the lid by putting the unit under cold water.

Adult Electric Scooter - 3 Reasons Why Adults Electric Scooters Are a Great Investment!

Before I actually rode an adult electric scooter, I thought they were mostly for kids. My neighbor let me ride his one Saturday afternoon, and the rest was history. I have had mine for about 3 months now, and I have discovered some fabulous benefits that I never thought of!

A Chance To Spend Time With My Kids

Electric Feel

We have two children. An 8 year old girl, and a 12 year old boy. They each had owned scooters for over a year, and really loved them! Unfortunately, between riding them, and going to school, we didn't see much of them.

Now that I have one, we frequently ride together. Sometimes I even load them in to my truck, and take them to a nearby park.

It gives us an excellent opportunity to spend some "quality" time together!

Great For Running Errands

We live in a small, self contained community. Many destinations within the community are too close for a car, yet too far to walk,( ESPECIALLY in the Summer!)

My scooter is perfect for getting me to local stores, recreation center, golf course etc. It is also cheaper than a gas powered scooter, more quiet, and better for the environment.

It has a range of about 12 miles before it needs to be charged, so it is perfect for our local area.

It Is GREAT Fun!

When I am riding,, I feel like a kid again! It is amazing how fun it is to zip around our community! I actually get a sense of freedom and adventure that I haven't experienced in a long time.

It has a top speed of 15 mph, which is amazingly fast. It is definitely faster than I can run. When all is said and done, who would have thought that I would get all those benefits from an adult electric scooter?

Electrical Hand Tools - What Makes Them Different

A lot of people are on the lookout for electrical hand tools. These tools don't necessarily have to be powered by electricity. These are hand tools that are designed for electrical jobs. So it goes without saying that electricians have them. After all, it would be pretty hard for them to do their job without the right tools.

Some people feel that you can just use any tools available. For example, can you use a screwdriver that you often use inside your workshop? That's not advisable for safety reasons. You'll be dealing with electricity and it's a good idea to use something that's designed to handle it.

Electric Feel

It's not only electricians that are checking out electrical hand tools. There are some "handymen" who are buying them so they can do the work themselves. Now, it's always advisable for you to get the services of a professional for complicated electrical jobs. But there are jobs that you can do around the house with the proper training and the right tools.

If you want to purchase electrical hand tools, here are some of the things that you need.

1. Pliers

This is one of the most versatile tools for electrical jobs. These pliers are tested to handle electricity. For example, you can find pliers that are tested to handle up to 10,000 volts. Now, there are a lot of pliers to choose from and it's a good idea to buy most of them. The must-haves are combination, diagonal cutting and long nose pliers.

2. Strippers, cutters and crimpers

Handling wires is a common job for electricians. Part of the job is to strip, cut and crimp wires. There are tools that incorporate all three functions so you may want to check it out. These are important electrical hand tools since you'll be handling exposed wires with them.

3. Testers

This is also another must-have for electricians. You have to measure the AC and DC voltage and this information will give you more details on what to do next. The most common one is the multi-meter so you may want to check that out first.

4. Screwdrivers

No toolbox will be complete without screwdrivers. Just make sure that they're properly insulated to protect yourself from electrical shock. There are a lot of screwdrivers available but you don't really have use for all of them. You can just start with a set of 8 and you should be good to go.

Starting Your Own Band

Once you've decided on a career in music, pursue it!... and don't give up! With enough practice and proper management, you have a decent chance at becoming successful. It doesn't happen overnight. There are bands who've played together for years and not hit the big time. Others who have never given up on their dream have been rewarded with record contracts. It's just like most everything else in life that's worth pursuing. The harder you work at it and the longer you stick to it, the better you become and finally, one day the call comes and you've made it!

Even though your music may be an esoteric expression of you, played from your heart and soul, there are some practical matters in the real world that need to be attended to before you can strike up the band.

Electric Feel Lyrics Mgmt

Things you'll need to consider:

Where will you practice? When will you practice? You'll need to coordinate these things with your bandmates. Scheduling practice and keeping everyone on the same page may be one of the hardest tasks a new band will have to contend with. But if you get the right group of people who see the same dream as you and are just as committed, you have a big part of the battle won.

To start off, you need to tell people. Check out the local classifieds to see if there's a band who needs your skills or put an ad in the paper yourself, get the word out on the street. You may be surprised at how many people share your dream. Post to blogs or other personal web pages. The important thing is to find people who you can work with and have fun but they must be as serious as you when it comes to their music and their future. Not everyone will think exactly alike, but find people who are creative and determined but friendly and flexible enough to listen to another's ideas.

Once you've assembled the right mixture of people, the next obstacle you face is where and when to practice. Maybe you or your bandmates will have a place at home or a garage. If that fails look for a place to rent. A unused warehouse or storage area but try to find a a place that charges a reasonable rate. Not having a place to practice is terrible reason to trash your dreams.

Ok, so you've got the band assembled, a great place to practice and everyone's committed. You or even some of the band members may already have songs written so you'll be ahead of the game. Let that be a starting point for writing more songs. Not everything you and your bandmates write will be a Top Ten hit but the point is to keep the creative juices flowing.

Next step is easy:

It's something you already enjoy doing - PRACTICE! The more you practice as a group, the better feel you'll have for one another's playing style, sense of timing and on-stage personalities. It makes for great music when a well practiced, cohesive band plays and that only comes with time, familiarity and practice. It's also a good idea to record your practice sessions. It will provide instant feedback and you'll know when you start sounding good and where you might need some improvement.

So you've practiced, practiced, practiced and you're sounding really good. Look around for potential places you can play, maybe houseparties, family get-togethers or a local party spot. Contact local bands and volunteer to open for them. The value of feedback from a live audience is immeasurable. The experience will help polish your band's stage performance and get you more exposure. The more people that see you and enjoy your performances, especially in nightclubs, the more likely you are to get more gigs.

While you're playing these great gigs, record the shows. Make demo tapes and mail them out to the radio stations, give them to friends and family, load them up to YouTube. Get your music out there! You've worked hard to get to this point, be proud and show off your accomplishments!

Armed with this advice, your "I won't quit 'til I'm there" attitude and your six-string, go out there and beg, borrow, scratch and fight until you get to the top of the charts. You have the dream, do you have the will?

Learn Guitar Quick - Guitar Scale Length

Many people think of scale length of a guitar as the length between the nut and the bridge-in other words, the playable or "business" length of the guitar string. In reality, this length is slightly longer than the official, specified scale length which is called the nominal scale length.

The nominal scale length is kind of a hypothetical ideal number. It is calculated by measuring the fixed distance between the nut and the 12th fret and then doubling this number. It is, in effect, the string length of a perfect ideal guitar in which the 12th fret would divide the strings exactly in half.

Electric Feel Lyrics Mgmt

The actual "real life" scale of a guitar is longer than the nominal scale (and the 12th fret does not divide the strings exactly in half) because strings stretch as we push them down to the fretboard and the resulting notes become sharp. We adjust the intonation to compensate for string-stretching by slightly increasing the string lengths above the 12th fret which brings the raised tones back down to their proper pitch.

So, what then is the standard scale length for a guitar? In fact, there is no such thing. Different manufacturers make different guitars with different lengths of scale.

A classic example for electric guitars is the length of the Gibson scale versus the length of the Fender scale. Gibson uses a 24¾-inch scale length on both the Les Paul and SG guitars. Fender, on the other hand, uses a 25½-inch scale length on its Stratocaster and Telecaster models. Why the difference-and does it even matter?

Yes it does. If we put the same gauge strings on our Fender and our Gibson guitars; we will find that, after we tune both guitars to concert pitch; the Gibson will have less tension on the strings. If the tension was equal on both guitars, then the shorter-scale Gibson would sound a higher note (because the strings are shorter). So the shorter strings need to be tuned with less tension to lower them down to concert pitch.

Since the Gibson strings are under less tension, bends and finger vibratos are smoother, more fluid and easier to perform. The guitar generally becomes easier to play.

So, doesn't that mean that shorter guitars are better? If fact, can't we even go a little farther and say the shorter the better?

No we can't. We are dealing with something here called an engineering tradeoff. This means, in the real world, when we improve one thing, another thing gets worse. In this case, shortening scale length makes the guitar more playable, but makes the sound less brighter.

We all know what happens when we loosen our guitar strings too much. Or when we press that whammy bar down too far. We get that pffftttt kind of sound of overly-loose strings. We lose brightness. Now, of course, this example takes things to the extreme, but it does show us what happens in the extreme. We lose the bright overtone-the high frequencies when we loosen strings.

That's one of the reasons why Strats and Telecasters have that classic twang and screaming lead sound and Les Pauls have that wonderful low-end crunch.

Scale length is a measure of the string length of a guitar. Different guitars have different scale lengths. The scale length of a guitar affects both the playability and the sound character of the instrument.

My Electrical Outlet is on Fire - What Do I Do Next?

You should probably do what most people do, run around yelling and screaming for help. Okay, forget what I just said, even though that is what most people tend to do when there's a home emergency like this.

Most electrical outlet fires starts when something is plugged in to the outlet that is drawing more electricity than the outlet was originally designed for. Most of the houses built today, have circuit breakers installed to prevent things like this from happening, but that doesn't guarantee anything. Just like everything else, sometimes electrical breakers fail to shut off during an emergency.

Electric Feel

If there is an electrical outlet fire, make sure that your children and everyone else is in a safe location first, before anything else. Make sure that your hands aren't wet and that you're not standing in the water, before you even think about opening up the main electrical panel. If you don't feel comfortable, contact 911 immediately.

If your electrical outlet catches on fire, the first thing that you're going to want to do is turn the main electrical breaker off to the house. If you don't know which one of your electrical breakers is the main one, turn all of them off. You can safely assume that all of the electrical breakers will be in the on position, but they should have on and off sides that are clearly visible for help.

Now what do you do, when you're electrical outlet catches on fire and you don't know where you're electrical breakers are located. You can look for your electrical breakers in the main electrical panel, which should be located near the electrical meter.

Most electrical meters and main electrical panels are going to be located on the outside of your house, but they could be located in your basement, if you have one. If you can't turn the electrical breakers off or if the electrical outlet continues to burn and smoke, you should contact your local fire department, because you're in the middle of a home damage emergency.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Electric Bicycles

An electric bicycle is powered by a battery and is preferred and selected by more and more people nowadays. Many people would like to choose electric bikes rather than ordinary bikes or cars because electric bike is environmentally friendly and has many advantages. However, every coin has two sides. Electric bicycles also have some disadvantages.

Advantages

Electric Feel

Electric bikes have a lot of advantages and in this article I want to state some of them.
It can help you save money. Imagine that if you have an electric bicycle, you will do not need to buy expensive petrol or gasoline and a large garage to park your car. Besides, you need not to spend money on car repairs and other services. All these can save you a lot of money. Generally, an electric bike is very cheap when compared to cars. You will not sweat when riding it. When riding an electric bicycle, you will not have to put in much effort. So you will not be sweaty when you reach your destination. This advantage can be more obvious when summer comes or when you need to travel a long way. It is quiet and safe. Unlike cars and scooters which have noisy engines, electric cycle provides you a quiet surrounding because the motor on it is almost silent. Moreover, it can also offer you a controlled and safe riding experience.

Disadvantages
Battery costs We all know that electric cycles are powered by batteries and all batteries have useful time. So when the battery on the bike gets old, we should buy a new one. However, the old batteries pollute the environment heavily and the new battery costs can be high. Heavy to carry Usually speaking, an electric bicycle is heavy and some cheaper ones may be heavier because they use lead acid batteries. So if the battery runs out on the way, you will feel difficult to pedal. Battery recharge You need to recharge the battery daily or very often and it always takes several hours for the battery to recharge fully. So before going somewhere, you should firstly make sure that the battery is full charged or you will have to pedal it.

Though there are some disadvantages of electric bicycles, the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. There is no perfect vehicle and among all vehicles, electric bicycle is the most worthy one. Do not hesitate, choose an electric bike and change your way of life.

Electric Bass Strings Explained

The character of a bass guitar string is primarily based on the winding (roundwound, flatwound, etc.) and the material used. We will explain the most common materials and windings, which probably account for 95% or more of every bass sound you have ever heard.

Roundwound strings have a bright, clear, often metallic sound with longer sustain. They are the most commonly used today, capable of producing
a wide range of tones that are distinctive to many styles of music.

Electric Feel

Roundwound strings are critical to the clear, percussive effect of slapping and popping in players like Wooten, Marcus Miller, Larry Graham, etc. Note that roundwound strings *can* be tougher on frets and particularly on fretless, due to the textured metallic wrapping.

Roundwounds are typically made of either stainless steel or nickel. Stainless steel are the brightest, clearest strings, which also produce the most amount of "finger noise" and buzzing sound against the frets. This is desirable in many styles.

Nickel feels a little softer on the hands and has less of the metallic high end treble in the sound than steel strings. This also equates to less finger noise coming through and a smoother, mellower sound than steel while still falling on the bright/clear end of the spectrum.

Flatwound strings are very smooth, with a much darker, muted or "dead" sound, and generally more low-end "thump."

Halfwound or groundwound strings are a nice compromise between round and flat. Halfwounds are essentially roundwounds that are partially ground-down and smoothed out, to providing a middle ground between brightness vs. deadness in sound, and metallic roughness vs. smoothness in feel.

Much less common these days than flat or roundwound, a few companies including Fender and Rotosound make a "tapewound" string out of Nylon- they are darker, warmer and softer than roundwounds. If you have ever seen black strings on a bass, that is Nylon.

More specifics, and organized lists of the various types of strings by manufacturer are available at the Bass-Strings.com Bass String Guide

The Effects of Electric Shock on the Body

When electric shock is brought up in conversation, it is usually centered on the topic of capital punishment. Although use of electric shock in executions has been replaced by lethal injection in the United States, the imagery is still commonly used in film and television. Death by shock is called electrocution, but shock can also be as benign as the buzzing feeling one gets when they touch a faulty Christmas bulb.

What Causes Shock

Electric Feel

Technically speaking, this type of shock occurs when the human body comes into contact with any source of voltage that is high enough to cause current through the muscles or hair. The minimum amount of current that is needed for a human to feel the effects is 1 milliampere or mA.

On the other side of the spectrum, currents close to 100 mA are generally lethal when they pass through sensitive areas of the body. In between slight shock which only results in a tingling sensation and electrocution, there are a number of medical complications that can arise.

Burns from Shock

Shock can result in severe burns. Smaller voltage levels result in more superficial burns on the skin's surface. But voltage levels of 500 to 1000 volts can cause internal burns. The potential for organ burns, including the heart, is what makes electrical burns significantly different from other forms of burns such as chemical, fire or grease. These burns can result in organ failure and eventual death.

The burns are often very deep and much trickier to treat than other burns. The healing process therefore is usually a much slower and arduous one.

The Effects of Shock on the Brain

Shock also affects the brain when it occurs at certain voltage levels or when the shock occurs right around the brain. When current passes through the brain, it can cause interference with the nervous system. This can adversely affect nervous system control over organs such as the heart and lungs. Repeated or severe electric shock can result in neuropathy.

Electric Shock and Appliances

There are millions of shock cases every year which are caused by everyday household or beauty appliances. It is vital that consumers are aware of the potential for electric shock and that they take any extra safety precautions suggested while using these products.

GEM Electric Cars

With the oil prices rising high and the constant damages of pollution causing heath issues as well as disastrous global warming, all leads to a single question - What are you contributing to the environment?

You definitely cannot avoid cars for your travelling purposes, as they reach you faster and is more time saving. But the option of choosing an electric car, is what brings you to the contemplation on how effective can it be?

Electric Feel

The market today showcases a wide range of electric cars by several manufacturers who are in cut throat competition to prove itself in this segment. But among these, selecting a car that suits you best is what concerns you and this is why GEM EVs (electric vehicles) are the most preferred cars around the world.

These cars are known as low speed cars but are very effective for states that have restricted its speed limits to 35mph on road. GEM EVs come with a speed limit of 25 mph and can run up to 30 miles on a single charge. The biggest advantage and convenience of it are:

Easy Charging:You can charge them on a 110 Volt outlet anywhere and at any time. Charging them will take a minimum of 6-8 hours, so it will always be better if you charge them at night.

Say 'No' to Global Warming:With owning an EV you will no longer have to face exhaust fumes. You will no longer be the reason for global warming and can feel proud that you are doing your part to save the environment. This is a great feeling as you do not have to drag your vehicle every time to the gas station.

Low Maintenance:The EV has less moving parts and you do not have to take them to the mechanic all the time. This means that you not only get a pollution free driving but also get a sound free quiet driving.

Cheaper Servicing: Another great part about these kinds of cars is that it is cheaper in services as compared to other normal cars. The car has only a single motor with a single moving part, a few batteries, coolant and fans. A mechanic can never be able to dirty his hands no matter how much fixing he does. You do not have to change the oil ever, and all you have to do is to change the battery and coolant flush, and this is only required after 100,000 miles.

Cheaper Fuel Consumption:Charging your car battery is way cheaper if you compare it with your fuel consumption for other cars in a month. Moreover, with fuel prices rising within a span of every couple of months, you can never be able to compensate it with a reason of not buying an EV.

GEM EV is one of the most effective ways to stay healthy in your environment. With so many advantages compared to your normal cars, these electric cars are the right way to say no to global warming.

Electric Toothbrush Ratings

Generally people are facing dental problems. There are many people that can't find time in their daily habits to go to the dentist. However, dental health is perhaps the most important because a healthy mouth can help you to avoid other health problems caused by the lack of dental hygiene. Small children, are taught by many parents how to use a toothbrush, how to wash their teeth and what technique to use for brushing correctly. Not to say that, this process must be repeated after every meal. As a child, it is very difficult and perhaps the most unpleasant time of the day. And as an adult, often it gets to be too insignificant, and we often forget the rules learned in childhood, and we do not even spend one minute with a toothbrush in our mouth, not to say that, after every meal we choose to chew gum and avoid washing teeth.

Developers of the industry of toothpaste and toothbrushes have found ways to make tooth brushing more efficient and pleasant and to avoid medical problems. They invented electric toothbrushes, which in time they add to it several essential improvements. Such toothbrushes have proved to be more effective and according to recent statistics, are used more often than normal brushes. I'll show you in this article, several reasons why people started to abandon manual toothbrushes.

Electric Feel

According to ratings made by specialized people, on more subjects, they have obtained the following conclusions. These devices remove more plaque than a manual brush, the clean sensation after use is stronger and lasts longer, removing stains from teeth is more efficient and more visible, are sensitive with gums and are not causing injury to them, the brushing technique respects the standards, the time dedicated for brushing teeth is much smaller, and the medical examination results that were observed after using it were much better than the manual brushing results. After this result I was determined to go to buy an electric toothbrush. I want to take advantage of it, and I will not avoid cleaning teeth in the grounds of lack of time, so you better do the same as me. It remains to be at your choice!

With the massive advance of 'computer' based music, recording enthusiasts have taken the internet world by storm. With the popular itunes now dishing out thousands of tracks per minute coupled with the colossal amount of indie sites springing up day by day, musicians have more opportunites to be heard than ever before, and hardly a need to move from their own seats.

Living life as a 'virtual' online star can have its pro's and con's, however any band or artist will tell you that performing live to a crowd of enthusiastic fans is about as good as it gets.

But, if you want the world to appreciate the 'real' you, how do you get the party started?

Well firstly, you may want to approach venues which already take unsigned acts and allow them to perform. They will require an entertainment licence (check in your geographical area what licences are required), and make sure that they are in tune with this legal requirement.

Find venues in your area which already seem to have a decent following of customers. There is nothing worse than booking a gig with a venue and finding out the place is nearly empty on your Saturday night appearance. Find out if any major event or function is happening on same the night you want to perform. Don't arrange your gig on the same night that another major event is going on in your town/city.

Ask the local general public where they go, what's the most popular venue in your area? If you don't mind travelling go further afield and do the same. Check out suitable venues in the paper and theatres.

Visit the venue that you like the look of at various times during the week and check out the type of people that go there. How could you live with yourself if you turned up to play a few Van Halen numbers to a bunch of retired war veterans. Become familiar with the atmosphere and see if they already pull in enough people before you gig. Are the staff friendly? Service good? All this is quite important as when you play in that venue for a few hours you become a part of it.

Print out flyers, and stick them anymore you can think of where people might actually read and pay attention, i.e. public toilets. In a busy shopping mall people may be just that... too busy. If you can get a small mention announcing the gig on radio, newspaper; brilliant.

Watch out for half empty haunts, which book a band in the hope that the band itself will provide some custom. This is absolute rubbish, it is not your duty to fill up their venue. However, it is admirable if you can do this on your own merit. If you're sure two hundred people are going to turn up at your gig, then charge the manager a respectable sum for your effort, after all thanks to you, they will be pocketing an unmentionable amount on drinks or food from his establishment on your behalf.

Once you book the gig get it in writing, confirming everything from the amount you are to be paid that night (regardless if the gig turns out well or not). An unsigned band were once given an advance of with a follow up fee immediately after the gig, but they never saw a dime more after the gig was over. The management mumbled that the gig did not go 'as well as expected' even though the band did pull in more people than the place ordinarily would have had. Still the manager refused to pay up. With nothing in writing the group could not contest him. Time and effort wasted!

Speak to musicians who are already performing there. They will advise you on how to 'approach' the manager and find out all things related such as, do they pay well? The amount of time a gig should lasts; what they pay out; do they allow or prefer loud instruments/music or do they prefer soft ambient music? If the place is very well known for its heavy rock performances, you're Diana Ross numbers may not go down a storm!

Will there be space for all your gear at the venue? Will you leave it there after the gig or take it with you? If they allow you to leave your equipment in the venue that evening make sure it's placed in a secure locked up area, and that someone will be there the next day for you to retrieve it. You can guarantee they won't be replacing your stuff if it gets stolen.

Check out the area you will be performing in. Does it feel right and can everyone see you well enough from outside your performance circle? Check that there are enough electrical extensions for you to plug in your gear, if these are on the other side of the room will your cables reach them? Take a long extension socket just in case. If you're singing on the night take two microphones and leave one as 'reserve'. The same goes for microphone cables. If your cable breaks or your microphone hits the floor and you've no replacement. End of Story!

Many establishments don't have much of an idea how much effort goes into the planning structure of gigging, they can think its just a matter of getting in and doing it, but as touring acts can tell you, there are whole load of factors to consider in preparation for one night. Tell the Manager you need to practice your set on a quiet day for a few hours. This will allow you to check out the ambience of the place and work out where you will place your gear and position yourselves on the night. If they don't allow this, re-consider!

If you've got any CD's of your own to sell, take a box with you and sell them 'during' the gig, dont wait till the end when everyone ups and leaves. Take anything you got, t-shirts with your band name on, business cards.... advertise!! Get someone to offer them around whilst your performing, also print any URL's to your online music on the CD or flyers you give out. If you have a second gig invite them all again at the end of the night, tell everyone from the newsagent owner to the postman. You can only rely on word of mouth.

Take into consideration that if the venue fills up on the night you may have to adjust your equipment levels, as people actually absorb some of the frequencies in the room; which is why you often think you're being drowned out by the crowd when everything sounded perfect on rehearsal. Take an engineer, or at least someone with a good ear to stand at different points in the room and listen. You may find you're clearly audible by the bar, but on the other side of the room you're just a mumble. Be careful where you position your speakers and if you're singing have a monitor facing you with just your vocals coming out. It's quite tricky to hear yourself if all the other musicians around you are blasting their instruments to high heaven.

If everything goes perfectly well and the manager is dying to re-book you charge him slightly more. Don't go excessive on this as he may be offended. But if you pulled it off really well and he knows the crowd will come back again, take the opportunity now, or try to get an 'extended' contract for say six months. Therefore you won't need to be looking around again in a couple of weeks for a new haunt.

So if your keen on jumping on the performing bandwagon, hopefully these tips will help you with finding the right place, feel comfortable on the actual night, and also ensure that you don't easily get ripped off.

How You Can Practice Guitar Like a Pro

Although I can't spell out the perfect practice routine for every type of musician, I can certainly help you to define, create and refine a practice routine that you can expand upon.

The myth

Electric Feel Lyrics Mgmt

There is a big myth that has traveled far and wide, and I think it puts a lot of fear into the minds of beginning guitarists. That myth is that you must practice something like eight hours a day to progress even remotely on the guitar. This is not true, itself, even remotely.

If you can practice for even twenty minutes a day, you will make progress and you will see that progress. That is fact, but along with it is another fact. The more you practice, the faster you will see your goals come to life. In other words, like with anything, you get back what you are willing to put in.

If you have been practicing twenty minutes a day, every day, for three months now, and you are not satisfied with the results, then you need to cut that three months in half. When I say cut those three months in half, I mean that literally. Increase your practicing routine to forty minutes and you should see new progress within in six weeks. Don't like that? start practicing for eighty minutes a day and you should see even greater progress in three weeks.

How you practice

This is where I need to talk about how you practice. Practicing more is not the trick to progress. Don't get me wrong - it is certainly a huge part of it, but you should

use your time well.

1. The process of elimination

Developing correctly on the guitar is all about being aware of your mistakes and bad habits. This often times requires that you be a little scrutinizing of yourself. You don't have to be hard on yourself, but you have to listen to what's really going on. If you can learn to do this, then you will be able to recognize bad habits that you are developing.

2. Correcting bad habits

Once you recognize a bad habit, your goal now should be to slow things down and focus on creating a new habit that has a positive impact on your playing. Bad habits are very hard to fix, and the more that you practice with them, the harder it becomes to correct them.

3. Time management

As I had mentioned earlier - the more you practice the faster the results come to you. A lot of people struggle with their amount of time, and really in a moment like this, all that I can say is that if you want it bad enough, then you'll make time. However, their is a solution to this problem. I would advise any guitarist to practice just a little bit, and to make sure that they practice at the same time every day or night.

Eventually this should be a sync, and when this happens you can start assessing your day, and figure out what you can correct in the day to further accommodate more practicing.

4. Consistency matters

More importantly than the time that you spend practicing guitar is the fact that you practice the same amount of time everyday. Skipping a day creates quite the reversal effect. If this is too pressuring for you to handle, then just practice for twenty minutes every day. There's a good chance that no matter how busy you, that you can do at least that.

5. Building up and working in doubles

If you start out with a twenty minute practice routine, and decide that its time to tack on some extra minutes, do it by doubling your current practice routine. This should now be forty minutes of practicing guitar. Eventually you can take that forty minutes and turn it into eighty minutes. Eighty minutes becomes two and a half hours, and so on..

The key is not to get yourself into a state of being overwhelmed. If this happens then it naturally takes the joy out of practicing or even worse, wanting to practice.

6. Assessing your practice routine

Its very important to have a good understanding of what style of music you want to focus on. This isn't hard at all because everyone is attracted to a particular form of music, but further more, you need to investigate and figure out what techniques and approaches to playing your style of music requires. Its always a good idea to make a list of these techniques.

7. Setting goals

After you've done this you need to decide what your exact goals are, but don't think small - think big. Those who think big have a greater advantage, because they tend to create a deeper level of self inspiration. Making a list of these goals is even more important than making a list of what you need to be practicing.

Once you have done this you can start setting sub goals. These sub goals, with the correct mindset and approach to practicing, should always be changing in a positive manner. If speed is the game that you want to play, then start small and keep track of your speed progress on a daily basis. Write down any kind of progress by keeping a small practice journal. When you look back at all of the progress that you have made up to a current date, it will inspire you to go even further.

8. Breaking down the time in your practice routine

All aspects of the guitar should be evenly practiced. Lets say that you are working with a one hour practice routine, and that this one hour practice routine is spent focusing on muscle memory development, technique building, and theory. It should look something like this.

10 minutes practicing alternate picking

10 minutes practicing legato

10 minutes practicing tapping

10 minutes practicing sweep picking

10 minutes working with chords

10 minutes studying musical theory

Believe it or not, but that little one hour practice routine would be excellent for any guitarist to take on, and its not so much time that its not doable. It is just consistent enough that it will promote a great deal of progress. If you started with this, then you could eventually take on a two hour practice routine, which would look like this.

20 minutes practicing alternate picking

20 minutes practicing legato

20 minutes practicing tapping

20 minutes practicing sweep picking

20 minutes working with chords

20 minutes studying musical theory

This will do wonders for your playing and bring your goals to you much faster, and if this is so, then a three hour practice routine...

30 minutes practicing alternate picking

30 minutes practicing legato

30 minutes practicing tapping

30 minutes practicing sweep picking

30 minutes working with chords

30 minutes studying musical theory

...Will truly take your playing to the next level.

Now the examples of what is being studied in all of those routines are very standard for someone studying to become an electric guitar virtuoso, but once you establish what you need to learn - you can substitute where you see fit.

9. Number of exercises

This is very important if you are working on mastering a particular technique. My suggestion is to work with just three exercises per technique, and to get those exercises to a point where you feel that you have truly mastered them, before moving on to other exercises.

By doing this you will make the best of your practice time, and you won't stress yourself out. Also, any time that you take on another exercise, it takes time away from your other exercises. If you want to get some of those riffs down, you've got to give them your all. Using the three hour practice routine above, it would translate like this.

30 minutes practicing alternate picking with 3 exercises = ten minutes per exercise

30 minutes practicing legato 3 exercises = ten minutes per exercise

30 minutes practicing tapping 3 exercises = ten minutes per exercise

30 minutes practicing sweep picking 3 exercises = ten minutes per exercise

30 minutes working with chords

30 minutes studying musical theory = ten minutes for scales and modes - ten minutes for musical terminology - ten minutes for ear training.

10. Dividing your time up

Some guitarists may disagree, but I have never had any problems with practicing here and there. If you choose to use the three hour routine, then you could practice for an hour in the morning, an hour in the evening, and then an hour later at night. I actually feel that this works better, and regardless, if you are working with a long practice routine - you must take breaks.

11. Getting the best out of your hands

If you are too hard on your hands you will definitely pay the price. Be aware of any discomfort that should arise, but also understand that you have to push your hands a little when they are being lazy. Its typical to have sweaty hands after working with some exercises, after all, the name of the game is to give them a work out. You want to be able to take them out of their current comfort zone, and show them a new comfort zone.

Another key thing is the time spent on an exercise. There is a certain and undefined muscle barrier that has to be broken if you are striving for any kind of speed. In order to do this you have to work with exercises for a good one to three minutes straight. You shouldn't do this with speeds that you are not capable of playing yet. This will definitely do damage to your hands. However, you can start doing this at a speed that is a breeze for you and then work up from their.

Developing speed in particular is like training for a marathon. You want to wear your hands out, take a good break, and then come back to wear them out some more. You have to build some muscle in your hands alongside of the dexterity.

Conclusion

Regardless of the amount of time that you spend practicing guitar, if you want to make true progress, then you will need to organize that time to get the most out of it. If you can take the first steps to utilize your time well, set small goals, and see the whole picture, then you'll really go far in your playing. Here's to your playing!
