What Is Music Therapy?

Music therapy is a non-invasive form of health care procedure that uses music and musical activities to treat and address physical, emotional, social and cognitive needs of children and adults with disabilities. This therapy has been in existence for many years now.

Music has the ability to cure and heal wounded minds. It has been proven to be beneficial to those people suffering from stress-related disorders, eating disorders, drug or alcohol addiction, or anorexia. It has also been proven to decrease behavioral problems, improve communication and expression of emotions, and improve pain management. It imparts a feeling of physiological and spiritual well being.

Where all other modes of communication fail, music with its non-verbal therapeutic qualities, tends to stimulate and penetrate the mind of medically diagnosed unresponsive people and makes social, emotional or cognitive connection possible. Music, as a form of expression, is used to provide a non-verbal outlet for all the unpleasant and unexpressed emotions that the patient might have held back for a very long period of time. When used along with conventional treatment, music therapy can help to relieve anxiety, stress and pain. Music therapy is also found to be effective in regulating the heart beat, blood pressure, and breathing rate

The therapy sessions include music making such as singing or playing any musical instrument such as a drum or a flute. It improves an individual's aptitude as well as the ability to create and play music. Playing instruments, singing, and writing lyrics gives the patient a mode to release the pent-up feelings, which are responsible for inducing stress in the patient. With repeated sessions, all the unexpressed emotions and stress bottled-up within the patient's mind gets released and the patient begins to feel better.

This type of therapy aids in improving the self-esteem of the person, reduces the stress levels, eases the feelings of anxiety and fear in the victim, improves stress management capacity and allows the person to cope with stress better. It also enhances socialization, helps develop free communication and expression of feelings, encourages independent thinking and decision making skills, and helps in adopting a non-abusive lifestyle.

Music therapy is administered by trained music therapists. The therapist sits with the person, familiarizes himself with the person's therapeutic needs, gets to know his musical tastes and then makes a structured plan of the therapy sessions. Since each person's tastes and needs are different, the therapist must work on providing the correct kind of music for a particular therapeutic need. Familiar music can elicit positive response in the person as can the degree of liking for that particular music and the memories associated with it.
